VISAA Spring Girls Soccer Information

On behalf of the VISAA and the girl’s state soccer committee I welcome you all to what I believe will be a very exciting spring for girl’s independent school soccer in Virginia.  A few days ago I sent out an email looking for schools who would be participating in girl’s soccer this spring and included the list of schools from last year.  I have added a number of schools thanks to your responses and they are now included on the roster of schools that is attached to this email.  As in previous years, for the 2016 state playoffs, schools will be divided into two divisions, with 125 (girls grades 9-12) being the divisional divider.  Schools that registered with VISAA in September 2015 with 125 or more girls will play in Division 1.  The schools registered with 124 or fewer girls will play Division 2 soccer. This is different from other VISAA sport divisions.  The soccer divisional breakdown differs from other sports because several Division 1 schools play girls soccer in the fall season instead of the spring.  Please note, schools in Division 2 may elect to play in Division 1.  This is a two-year commitment by the school, which must notify the soccer committee prior to the publishing of the first poll.  A school in Division 1 may not elect to play in Division 2.

There will be separate polls, tournaments, and All-State awards for the two divisions. The soccer committee, with representatives from each region of the state, will publish polls listing the 10 highest ranked schools in each division.  Polls will appear on March 21, April 4, 18 and May 2.  The selection committee will meet on Saturday, 5/14 or Sunday 5/15.  State tournament dates are Tuesday, May 17 (quarterfinals); Friday, May 20 semi’s and Saturday, May 21 championship.  Quarterfinals are held at the higher seed at 5:00 unless both schools agree on a different game time.  The semifinals and finals are played at Ukrop Park, 5241 Ridgedale Parkway, Richmond, Virginia 23234.  Semifinals will be played at 4:00 (D2) & 6:00 p.m. (D1) on Friday.  Championships will be played at 4:00 (Division 2) & 6:00 p.m. (Division 1) on Saturday.

Schools aspiring to be included in the polls and make the state tournament should ensure that no conflicting events at your school prevent your team from playing on those dates (prom, graduation, etc).  Schools unable to participate in the state tournament should notify the committee.  For consideration in the polls, schools must email their scores to their soccer committee representative by Saturday of each week.  There is a spreadsheet attached where each school can find contact information for their respective reps.  As an alternative to email, schools can agree with their rep that they will post game scores on MaxPreps.com.  All of our committee members are volunteers and are teachers/administrators at their respective schools.  They cannot take the time to track down your school’s scores.  Please be respectful of their time and report scores on time.

Please be cognizant of the VISAA transfer rule, which requires all players to be enrolled as full-time students working toward graduation in your school 30 days prior to the state quarterfinals to be eligible to play in the state tournament.  For this year, that date for girls soccer is Thursday, April 21, 2016.

Our committee is looking forward to another exciting spring of soccer for the independent schools in Virginia.
