National accolades continue to find our outstanding VISAA coaches.
Last August, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced that they were inducting Mary Werkheiser, who coached the Norfolk Academy Bulldogs field hockey team from 1989 to 2025, into their Hall of Fame.
Werkheiser's tenure at NA saw the Bulldogs win six VISAA state field hockey championships (2014, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2023, and 2024). She also served for 20 years on the VISAA state field hockey committee.
The recognition follows multiple other accolades over a storied career, including NA's first-ever "Excellence in Coaching Award" in 2005, induction into the Tidewater Field Hockey Ring of Honor in 2021, and 14 conference coach of the year awards from the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools.
The NFHCA Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held on January 15, 2026 in Lake Mary, Florida, as the culminating event of the organization's annual meeting.
